From Heat magazine

Gareth Gates might not have been the nation's chosen one on 9 February but he too was starting a career as a pop star the next day after being signed to 19 Management and BMG Records for a reported £1million.

SUNDAY
Gareth spent the day after his defeat in the studio recording tracks with Simon Cowell. His mum Wendy said, "He's feeling really good about things now. He was gutted about coming second, but now he realises it doesn't matter as the offers he's had in have been fantastic." He spent the evening in the Pop Idol hotel suite with his management and family, just hanging out.

MONDAY
Gareth flew business class to Florida with his management representative - his first ever long-haul flight. He arrived in Florida in the early evening, checked into his hotel and then slept.

TUESDAY - THURSDAY
Gareth was allowed two days holiday before the work begun. He spent the time chilling out and exploring the area, including the aquarium. Gareth also took a boat trip where he was chased by photographers and journalists.

FRIDAY
After a relaxing day, Gareth shot the video for his single Unchained Melody in the evening.

SATURDAY
Gareth flew back to London in the evening and arrived at the Pop Idol hotel suite in the early hours of Sunday morning.

From Gareth's local paper
Gareth Gates lies back on his bed and casts a glance at the TV.

For the moment the cartoons blaring away in the background hold his attention, but he knows he has other more immediate tasks to tackle.

The 17-year-old doyen of prime-time TV has, for a little while at least, put his new status as a pop idol on the back-burner and is trying to ignore the fact that he is on the verge of becoming something big - something very big.

In a few months time he could be a rival to Robbie Williams and challenging Michael Jackson for the number one spot.

But now, he has to concentrate on just one thing. His English homework.

For now he is just another student at Dixons City Technical College, albeit one whose face has been plastered across the nation's screens.

He is just worried that his homework has to be finished before he gets behind the desk for his first lessons back after making it into the final round of ITV Saturday night smash hit Pop Idol.

A cheeky grin bursts across his face as he insists he isn't expecting too much attention from his pals at college.

Life apparently is not going to change Gareth, well not yet anyway.

I've got my feet firmly on the ground, I can't see life changing too much, says Gareth.I reckon more girls will talk to me at college and more people will look at me, but they know me for who I am.

The second-year A-level student has come back down to earth to face the piles of homework building up on his bedroom table.

Despite being catapulted into the spotlight after winning the first semi-final heats of Pop Idol last Saturday, his main concerns are looking for university places with his fellow students (pictured with him).

He looks serious for a moment as he considers his future although he admits he may take a break from his studies depending on his success in the show.

I am going to continue with my A-levels, but if I get further into the competition I may have to leave school. The college has been very supportive. If I miss too much then I am going to retake my A-levels later in the year.

His dad, Paul, looks on proudly and tells how this is a chance of a lifetime for Gareth and he can take his exams later if he misses too much work.
