Gareth Biography
Gareth Gates was born in Bradford in 1984. Like his father, Gareth suffered from a speech disability, although his stammering disappeared when he sang. As a young church-goer he joined his local church choir and his talent became apparent. By the time he was 15, he had set his sights on stardom not only as a career but as a way of promoting awareness of those who had similar disabilities to his own. In 1999, he got through the heats of the kids TV show Steps To The Stars but was beaten by a line dancing child.
In the summer of 2001 he filled out an application for a new ITV show 'Pop Idol', based on the previous programme 'Popstars', but instead this would be to find solo stars not a pop group. In the queue for the Manchester auditions he was spotted by the camera crew and Gareth and his sister
